A Creative Commons license gives creators of any background a standardized way to give the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. The license tells creators what they are able to use a previously published work for and how they can use it legally.  Below, we cover the licensing options available.

Creative Commons Licensing Options

The creative commons licenses allow for free distribution of copyrighted works, however there are several restrictions involved, depending on the type of license.

There are many forms of Creative Commons licenses available. Licenses differ by a variety of combinations that alter the terms of delivery. Here are six different types, from the most to the least permissive:

  1. CC BY: This license lets people distribute, re-use, adapt, and expand on the content in any medium or format as long as credit is given to the author. This license permits commercial use.
  2. CC BY-SA: This license allows users to share, re-use, adapt and expand on the content in any medium or format as long as it is licensed to the author. The license allows commercial use. If you modify, adapt, or expand on the content, you will license the updated content under the same conditions.
  3. CC BY-NC: This license lets people distribute, re-use, modify and expand on the content in any medium or format for non-commercial purposes only, and only as long as it is credited to the author.
  4. 5. CC BY-ND: This license allows people to copy and distribute the content in any medium or format in an unused format only, and only as long as the credit is given to the author. The license allows commercial use.
  6. CC BY-NC-ND: This license enables re-users to reproduce and distribute the content only in unadapted form, in any medium or format, for non-commercial purposes only, and only as long as the author is given the attribution.
