Targeting via Google Search Terms on YouTube

It’s no secret that you can target your YouTube advertisements based on keyword and that’s a very effective way to target people. But did you know that you can actually have your YouTube ads triggered by somebody’s actual Google searches? In today’s video we’re going to be talking all about that. My name is Justin Sardi and I’m the co-founder and CEO of TubeSift. And like I said, today I’m going to be breaking down exactly how you can use Google search terms to target people on YouTube. Now, this is a very powerful strategy that’s going to allow you to essentially tap into the power of Google search, except for you’re going to be able to apply it on YouTube.

Targeted ads can save marketers money because they are only paying for ads to interested audiences which boosts their chances of making sales.

Targeting via Google Search Terms Saves on Costs

Now this is going to do a couple of things. Number one, it’s going to give you very targeted YouTube ads. And number two, it’s going to allow you to essentially bypass the traditional cost per click model of Google search advertising, which can get quite expensive especially for some of those competitive keywords and transfer that over to YouTube and allow you to use video ads to connect and communicate with your ideal audience. So I’m going to go ahead and jump over to my computer. I’m going to show you exactly how to do that step-by-step over the shoulder in your Google ads account.

Set up a Keyword Lists

Go ahead and set up a keyword list where we can target using Google search terms. So we’re going to come over here to the shared library and we’re going to go to the audience manager. Now over here, you can see custom audiences. So we’re going to come over here and we’re going to click this plus button. We’re going to create a custom audience. Now these have recently changed. They had previously a couple of different options in here. Now it’s just one thing. So you title it what you want and you can either target people with any of these interests or purchase intentions or you can target people who search for any of these terms on Google. And you’re just going to add these like how to run YouTube ads. And you hit enter, right? How to get your ad or how to get ad on your YouTube video, right?

Finding your Keywords

Things like that. How to run a YouTube ad. And they’ll give you some suggestions here. You can also jump over to TubeSift. Let’s see here. Sorry. I got this shrunk. There we go. So we can jump over here to TubeSift. And what I like to do with these, because sometimes you want a lot of keywords. So you’ll come over to the keyword ideas and you change the source to Google. And I might search for whatever, YouTube ads. And obviously this is going to like have some weird ones where it’s out of control, things like that. So we’re going to edit these negative keywords over here once we get this going. I’m just showing you for time sake how to do this. We have about 245 keywords. I can go edit negative keywords and we could take things out like whatever, get rid of or add block, right.

Things like that. So we can say, we don’t want block in here, things like that. And you can see they’re going down, annoying. So we would basically come through and figure out the keywords that we want. And let’s just say we have all these. So we could select these. We can export these. We can copy these right here. And then what we would do is … oops. Right over here in the people who search for any of these. We can paste all these here and you can just come through and delete the ones you don’t want. But essentially what that’s going to do is allow you to target people who have searched for any of these keywords, right? Then you’ll just save it. Sorry. Save the audience. And then when you go to set up your actual ad itself, all you’ll do is you can target this custom audience under audiences and you’ll be able to target people that are on YouTube based on their Google search terms. So super, super cool strategy. Has been working really well for us in some of our other accounts.
