Types of ads to grow your channel and subscriptions
Justin Sardi: Today, we’re going to be talking all about using YouTube ads to promote and grow a YouTube channel. Now, this is a question we commonly get in our support desk, in our Facebook groups, all that good stuff. People are always asking, “How do I use YouTube ads? What’s the best type of YouTube ad to use to grow subscriber count on a YouTube channel.” So today we’re going to be talking all about that.
My name’s Justin Sardi, I’m the CEO and co-founder of TubeSift.com and, like I said, today we’re going to be talking all about how to use YouTube ads to promote a YouTube channel and grow that subscriber base. Now, there are technically two types of ads that work to do this and we’re going to be talking about both of those today. Now you can use either an in-stream ad or a video discovery ad.
Video Discovery Ads
The more effective one is going to be a video discovery ad that is going to show up in the YouTube search. So the way that most people grow a YouTube channel is by having some of their videos rank in YouTube search, right? So let’s say you have a home improvement channel. There are tons and tons of keywords that people can search for when it comes to home improvement, right? You would get your videos to rank for a number of those keywords. People would watch your videos, be like, “Hey, this is great content.” And they subscribe to your channel. Now that’s all fine and dandy, it works great, but a lot of times it’s hard to outrank some of these channels that have been there for years and years and have millions of subscribers. What if you’re just getting started and you can’t show up at the top of the search results.
That’s when video discovery ads come in. We have a full training on exactly how to set these ads up and we’ll link to that below this video as well. But basically what you’re going to do is, let’s say you have a home improvement channel, for example, like we were just talking about. You have one video that you know, “Hey, this video is great. It drives subscribers. People watch it. They think our content is great and they end up subscribing to our channel.” You can find that out in the YouTube analytics, or the creator studio, by checking your analytics, but that’s a whole other topic. You can actually just Google ‘how do I find out which videos are getting me subscribers?’ And you’ll find tons of content on that. So we have this one video that we know is getting us a lot of subscribers.
Use the Keyword tool to find your niche
However, we want it to rank and get in front of more people in the home improvement niche, right? So maybe that video is titled something like three tips for adding value to any home or something along those lines. Right? What we could do is set that video up as a video discovery ad and have it shown every single time somebody is searching for any keyword that we want to have our video rank for, if you will, in the home improvement niche. So it might be how to replace hardwood floor in your house, how to paint walls, how to update a bathroom vanity, whatever, there’s tons and tons of keywords. You can use the TubeSift keyword tool to find out what people are actually searching for and then have your video shown for that. So you just set up a video discovery ad and have your video show, looking to improve your home, check out our top three tips for adding value to your home, or something along those lines.
It’s going to resonate with a lot of people in the home improvement niche. And, hopefully, when you set up a good custom thumbnail using the TubeSift Banner Studio, Banner Design Studio, hopefully people will see that video. They’re like, “Yeah, maybe I should watch this.” Check it out and then ultimately subscribe to your channel. The one thing you are going to want to do is make sure, and this is just best practice for any content videos on YouTube, is make sure that you say something like, “Hey, if you liked this video, please subscribe to our channel. It helps us know our content’s working.” Or “You like our content? Helps us encourage us to make more videos.” Something along those lines. Which, by the way, if you do like this video, please subscribe to my channel. Right?
In-Stream Ads
The other type of ad you can use as an in-stream ad. Now we’ve done this in the past for clients. It’s not quite as effective because this will boost your subscriber count, but it tends to be a little less engaged when, or these subscribers tend to be a little less engaged than somebody who came in from a video discovery ad and liked to the content and went ahead and subscribe. So the way those in-stream ads work is you create what’s called a channel trailer saying, “Hey, if you’re into home improvement, you need to subscribe to our channel. We teach this, this, show this, blah, blah, blah. Go ahead and click the link on this video to subscribe to our channel.” And on the in-stream ads you’re allowed to have a call to action that says, click here to take this action. Right? And you would basically set that call to action as your YouTube subscribe link, so somebody will watch the channel trailer, be like, “Hey, this is cool.” Click on it and then they’ll be taken to a page that’s like, “Hey, do you really want to subscribe to this channel?”
Use TubeSift to grow your YouTube Channel
This tends to get a little bit cheaper subscribers, however, like I said, they’re not quite as engaged in the long run. And personally, I think that more engaged subscribers are more valuable and going through that natural process, instead of kind of trying to force the subscriber, is always going to go over a little bit better on YouTube.
So some of the tools we talked about today, or the only tool actually, is TubeSift. So you can definitely go to TubeSift.com, get yourself a subscription. It’ll help you make custom thumbnails for those video discovery ads. There’s a full on training course inside of there that’s going to show you exactly how to set up both types of ads that I’ve talked about today.
And you also get access to the Banner Design Studio, which will help you get those custom thumbnails, as well as the keyword tool that’s going to help you find those actually searched keyword phrases, so you could put your videos in front of the right people when they’re searching for these keywords. So that is it for me on this video. If you liked it, please give us the thumbs up. If you’re watching on YouTube or if you’re watching on the blog, feel free to check out any of our other blog posts or subscribe to our YouTube channel. So that’s it for me on this one. Bye for now.
