How we generated $47,149 in revenue using Tubesift & YouTube Ads Placement Targeting

Guest Author: Kim Blanc

If you’re new to the YouTube Ads world and trying to wrap your head around the various types of targeting available, including placement targeting, then I’d like to introduce you to what’s possible even for beginners.

When I started my YouTube Ads journey in early 2019 I was eager to create video ads and test things out.

And like most YouTube Ads neophytes, I started playing around with Placement targeting.

Fast forward to today and we’ve generated over $47,149 in revenue just using Tubesift to find high quality video placements to run our YouTube Ads on.

I’m going to break down exactly how we did that below….

But before we get into, let’s do a quick run through on what placements are and how to properly use them.

So what are Placements?

Placements are a form of YouTube Ads targeting that allows you to place your video ad on any video of your choosing as long as that video is monetized (meaning it’s able to have ads ran over it)

There are 2 types of placements

  1. Individual video placements – ability to lace your ad on 1 video
  2. Channel placements – ability to place your ad on any video on that channel

Now that  $47,149  in sales was generated using Channel placements, here’s why….

Channel placements are the most effective because people who follow niche specific channels tend to be deep fanatics of that niche. Just like you’re reading this blog post about YouTube Ads either because you want to

  1. Learn YouTube Ads as a skill to get clients for your agency/business
  2. Learn YouTube Ads as a skill to generate leads for your coaching/consulting business

You didn’t land on here by accident. You’re actively going to websites about this topic for education or entertainment. Niche specific channels on YouTube work the same way.

So using channel placements increases your  chances of hitting the right person (someone interested in your offer) consistently.

The keyword to takeaway from all of this is CONSISTENTLY.  If you can’t get your ads in front of the right people consistently, then your YouTube Ads can’t be profitable.

For example:

Tractor Time with Tim’s channel is all about sub-compact tractors, more specifically John Deere sub-compact tractors. *These are the green tractors*

Every video just about covers the exact same, repeated topic.

So if I wanted to reach an audience of John Deere sub-compact tractor owners, I could choose any video from his channel and land in front of the right person consistently.

If you were trying to sell to someone interested in John Deere tractors, you could use placement targeting to place your ad on YouTube channels with videos about John Deere tractors.

What Channels to Avoid for Placements

Whereas, let’s say we were to collect 100 video placements but all from different channels.

Some of these channels made a video about that topic only ONCE.

For example: A channel like NoNonsenseKnowHow only has 1 video about John Deere sub-compact tractors, among other videos that don’t pertain to my target audience.

This is an example of a channel that only has one video about John Deere tractors, so this wouldn’t be an ideal channel for placements if you’re marketing tractors.
This is an example of a channel that only has one video about John Deere tractors, so this wouldn’t be an ideal channel for placements if you’re marketing tractors.

Since the audience is broad, it will be harder for us to reach the right people consistently (keyword here is consistently) and it will cost more – which we don’t want.

Rules to Find the Best Channels to Run Ads On

Now that we know that channel placements are the most superior, we need to remember these rules to ensure we find the best channels to run our YouTube Ads on.

  1. You must find channels that constantly upload videos (at least 2-3 videos a week) to make channel placements effective
  2. These channels should have at least over 10,000 subscribers – Let’s us know people are actively following these channels
  3. Their videos should consistently be over 1,000 views – Let’s us know people are actively watching their videos and they aren’t one trick video ponies

Now how do you find these channels?

How to Find the Best Channels for Placements

You use the rule of > 2

Here’s what you should do….

  1. Open up a separate tab and go to YouTube.
  1. Now do a keyword search for your niche. For the purpose of this example, let’s say we own an e-commerce website that sells electric bicycles. So you’d do a YouTube video search for “ebikes”.

Your search results would look like this:

This is the result you get when you search ebikes on YouTube. But please do a search for whatever your niche is.
This is the result you get when you search ebikes on YouTube.  But please do a search for whatever your niche is.
  1. Now on the left, hit filters > Filter by upload date > This year.
After you do a search for your niche on YouTube, hit Filters > Filter by upload date > This year.
After you do a search for your niche on YouTube, hit Filters > Filter by upload date > This year.
  1. That will then give you a list of videos uploaded within this year related to ebikes.
  1. Now using the Rule of 2, scroll down the list of videos and look for CHANNELS that appear at least 2 times.
  1.  These are generally niche specific channels that constantly upload content about that topic and these are the channels we want for our placements.

Using the rule of 2 I found 3 channels that fit the criteria for our example of ebikes.

EbikeSchool.com
EbikeSchool.com
Bolton Ebikes
Bolton Ebikes

It should look like this: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRMrqzsrPIWvY3PINkLKs-Q

Or this https://www.youtube.com/user/ElectricBikeReview

Not this: https://www.youtube.com/c/EbikeSchoolcom/videos (if your link contains “/videos” then you have the wrong url)

7. Now head over to Tubesift, hit the “search for video placements by channel tab” and paste your url

Paste your channel url in TubeSift’s search field for “By Channel”.
Paste your channel url in TubeSift’s search field for “By Channel”
  1. Before you hit the search button, be sure to tick the Trending Videos Only button in the top right corner.

This is a crucial step you should not skip over.

You only want new video placements from these channels and not older videos from 5 years ago that have already peaked in viewership and died out.

If you skip this step then your ad will barely get any views or traffic.

These are the settings we always use:

  1.  Once you’ve added the trending videos only filter, you can now search for channel placements to use for your YouTube Ads Targeting

Tip: Create 1 adgroup for each Channel Placement so everything is neat and organized in your Google Ads account. This is how that looks:

This is how an adgroup looks for each channel placement.

Tip: Be sure to update these every month because these channels constantly pump out new content (which is what we want).
